Administrative History

James Whitney Bunting served as President of Oglethorpe University from 1953 to 1955. These papers were collected in the course of his administration as President and retained by Oglethorpe University.

Biography

James Whitney Bunting, who succeeded Philip Weltner, was the seventh president of Oglethorpe University, and became the third president to serve after the campus moved from Milledgeville. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1913 to George Lewis Miller and Helen Elizabeth Whitney, married Mildred Eleanor Griscom in 1939, and served in World War II as a Navy Lieutenant. Bunting received both a B. S. and an M. A. in Economics from the University of Louisville, Kentucky. Bunting, before coming to Oglethorpe, had previously taught economics at Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana and Hobart College in Geneva, New York as well as at the University of Georgia. Bunting later became the Director of the Bureau of Business Research at Athens. He authored two books, Essentials of Retail Selling and Ethics for Modern Business Practice. Bunting came to Oglethorpe in 1952 and served as its Vice President until 1953. Bunting played a role in the politics of North DeKalb, by serving as a member of the Board of Directors at DeKalb National Bank, and also as elected Mayor of North Atlanta in 1955. After taking office as Mayor, he unexpectedly resigned as President of Oglethorpe University. Later, Bunting assumed a position with the General Electric Company in New York.

The items include correspondences to and from Dr. Bunting, biographical data, images, event programs, articles written by Dr. Bunting, various press clippings, reports and schedules related to Oglethorpe University.
