The collection contains items related to the crypt of civilization. In 1937 Thornwell Jacobs conceived of the idea of preserving the known facts and artifacts of current western civilization. He hired T.K. Peters as the archivist for the project and together they devised a system for collecting and preserving the materials that would be sealed in the crypt in Hearst Hall on May 25, 1940. Many letters were sent soliciting information and items for the crypt. The collection also contains correspondence with William Lee Nunn of Buford , Ga. Nunn, a 1922 graduate of Oglethorpe, taught at the Y.M.C.A. in Oita, Japan.
