Administrative History
The Bronte Society is “one of the oldest literary societies in the English
speaking world,” according to their website (http://www.bronte.org.uk). Membership is
open to anyone who wishes to join.
The copy of Villette printed in 1853
represents one of the instances in which Charlotte Bronte used her pen name,
Currer Bell, for the purpose of publication. The particular edition in this
collection is the New York, Harper & Bros. Villette was her third
published novel (1853) following Jane Eyre and Shirley.
