Administrative History

Woodrow Wilson’s uncle, James Woodrow, was a member of the faculty of Oglethorpe University when it was located in Midway, near Milledgeville, GA. James Woodrow was a native of Carlisle, England. He earned his A.B. degree at Jefferson College in Pennsylvania and later earned a Ph.D. from Heidelberg. He taught at Oglethorpe for eight years, where he also became a member of the clergy and one of the most highly regarded of faculty members. When Oglethorpe was re-located and opened in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Thornwell Jacobs wrote to President Woodrow Wilson asking him to attend the cornerstone laying ceremony. Wilson was not able to attend but sent a letter that was read at the ceremony. The letter in this collection addresses his response to Jacobs who asked him to be a board member.
