Biography and Administrative History
The Oglethorpe Women’s Network, founded by Betsy Hansen, is comprised of Oglethorpe faculty, staff, and community volunteers who are interested in joining. The goals of OWN are: to sponsor events for the educational, social, and personal development of women both on and off campus; establish interesting programs and gatherings where women can learn and share their experiences; familiarize women in the Atlanta community with the Women’s and Gender Studies program and other educational programs and opportunities at Oglethorpe University. The original steering committee for OWN was comprised of Dr. Vicky Weiss, Dr. Rebecca Hyman, Marsha Large, wife of OU President Larry Large, and Betsy Hansen, wife of Board of Trustees member Harold Hansen.”

“The original OWN was formed in fall of 2000 as a vehicle to address issues of concern to women through public programs and seminars and other forms of communication. The original group was fortunate to have the guidance and assistance of Dr. Jean Fox O’Barr, Director of the Women’s Studies Program at Duke University. OWN’s first program was a collaboration between Duke University and Oglethorpe University.”

Betsy Gamble Hansen, founding member, was a graduate of Duke University. She was a leader in her community serving as a board member for UNICEF, member of the Duke University’s Council on Women’s Studies, and founder of OWN at Oglethorpe University. She wrote a novel in 2003, Portals. Her inspiration and determination was the influence behind their successful program, Her Story: Women in the Civil Rights Movement.
