Description
The collection contains items related to the Oglethorpe University Medical School. In early 1941, Oglethorpe University, under Thornwell Jacobs, decided to establish a medical school to both serve as potential competition to Emory and to offer new courses to bring potential prospective students. However, the school was immediately plagued with problems over funding and accreditation. These problems would lead to the school closing in 1944. The failure of the school to be accredited by the National Board of Medical Examiners and growing distrust in Jacobs would result in Jacobs’ removal as president. The collection contains correspondence from a variety of Oglethorpe community members, concerned parents, Georgia medical board officials, and others regarding the school. There are also various board resolutions, minutes from board meetings, reports by committees, the medical school announcements and bulletins, and evidence used in a following court case from former medical school students against Oglethorpe.
