Description
This collection consists of five handwritten notebooks from 1851-1852, and one undated, by Georgia Presbyterian clergyman William Elliott Baker (1830-1906) containing lecture notes from when he was a student at Princeton Theological Seminary. The notebooks cover lectures delivered by prominent seminary faculty Archibald Alexander, Joseph Addison Alexander, and Charles Hodge on theological topics such as pastoral theology, systematic theology, church history, and exegesis and interpretation of several New Testament books particularly the Second Epistle to the Corinthians.

Biographical Note
William Elliott Baker (February 20, 1830-January 5, 1906), son of John Osgood Baker and his wife, Francis Adeline Fabian, was born in Liberty County, Georgia. He studied at Nassau Hall (now Princeton University) and graduated in 1850, whereupon he entered Columbia Theological Seminary (Columbia, SC). After completing the first year of his theological course at Columbia, he transferred to Princeton Theological Seminary from which he graduated in 1853. He was then ordained by the Presbytery of West Jersey and served pastorates at churches in Bridgeton, NJ (1853-55), Sacramento, CA (1856-57), Staunton, VA (1857-1884), and Roswell, GA (1890-1906). His longest terms of ministry were at First Presbyterian Church of Staunton, 27 years, and First Presbyterian Church of Roswell, 16 years.

On July 7, 1856, he married Catherine Evelyn King—the daughter of influential Roswell planter and industrialist Barrington King—with whom he had seven children. Upon assuming the pastorate of First Presbyterian Church of Roswell, Baker resided with his family in historic Barrington Hall until his death in 1906.
