Biography/History
Earle Johnston “Carradine” Moore was born in Plant City, Hillsborough County, Florida, on December 9, 1922, and from an early age was involved in sports. He graduated from Winder High School in 1940. Moore attended Oglethorpe University on a full scholarship, and as an athlete, he pitched on the last baseball team coached by Frank Anderson. He also served as sports editor for The Stormy Petrel, Oglethorpe University’s newspaper. In 1941, he married his high school sweetheart Jimmie Williams and later had two children, a daughter Liza Jane and a son Earl II. After graduating from Oglethorpe University in 1943, he played service baseball for General Hospital in Atlanta, and then went on to pitch three seasons of professional baseball with the Detroit Tigers. He began his teaching and coaching career as Principal and coach at Rabun County High School in 1943 as well. From 1943 to 1961, Moore held several posts as Principal, Athletic Director, and teacher in high schools in Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina. In 1948-1949, Moore took leave to earn his Master of Arts Degree from Stetson University. Moore returned to Georgia in 1961 to teach and coach first at Woodward Academy and then at Douglas County High School in Douglassville, Georgia in 1972. He retired from coaching in 1974, but continued to teach mathematics until full retirement in 1983. Earle Johnston Moore died on December 28, 1994.
Frank Butler Anderson, Sr., was born in southern Cobb County, Georgia in 1882, and attended the University of Georgia in Athens. While there, he played football, baseball, and track. Anderson graduated in 1904. Anderson married Lorena Walton Brown of Athens in 1905 and had five sons, three of which attended Oglethorpe University. Anderson came to Oglethorpe University in 1917 to serve as the first athletic director and professor of mathematics. Coach Anderson is credited with supplying more major league baseball players from Oglethorpe University than any other college coach and initiating the Oglethorpe University football program. Anderson retired in 1944 after 28 years of coaching and teaching. He then went on to work for the Department of Labor in the Atlanta office, and worked up until he became ill six months before his death at the age of 85, in 1966. Lorena Anderson died in 1948. Frank was the first inductee into the Oglethorpe University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1962. Oglethorpe University dedicated its baseball field to Anderson, naming it “Anderson Field” in 1963. In 1966, one month after Anderson’s death, he was inducted posthumously into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. Anderson earned the nickname “The Father of Oglethorpe Athletics”.

Research includes correspondence, publications, articles, clippings, programs, and photographs. Visual images have been moved to the Visual Arts Collection (MS 23 – Visuals).
