Administrative History
The Bozart and Contemporary Verse was first published in September 1927. Its name derives from the phrase Beaux Art. This phrase was then contracted to Bozart in Henry Louis Mencken’s essay, The Sahara of the Bozart. Mencken suggests that Southern culture is incapable of producing fine art. His essay popularized the word to the point where its use in the title of a southern poetry review was an easily understood gesture.
Editor Ernest Hartsock designed this magazine to cultivate southern talent and encourage writers to express their opinions. As well as being a creative space, the magazine also had writing competitions where a $25.00 cash prize was awarded to the best poet in every issue.
A memorial issue was released in the spring of 1931, after Hartsock’s death that previous winter. His successors continued to print his name on the cover of the magazine until the last issue was published in the spring of 1935.
